Kyle, a young world champion

Vote for Kyle

Kyle Cox, age 6, of Carrollton went to Pinehurst, N.C., and competed in the USKids Golf World Championship July 27-29.  This was his second trip to the World Championship, tying for 16th last year at age 5 by shooting the lowest score of all 5-year-olds competing in the 6-and-younger division.

Kyle Cox with his golf medal after winning the USKids Dallas Local Tour Championship on August 1 at Brookhaven Country Club.

This year Cox entered the tournament with high hopes, having won the Jekyll Island Regional Cup in February, competing against many of the same golfers he would face at Pinehurst. There were 84 kids signed up in the 6-and-younger age division, many from other countries including the Philippines, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Kenya, South Africa, Venezuela, United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.

Day one Cox shot a 39, which placed him in a tie for 13th. Cox wasn't satisfied with that and knew that he could do better — he wanted the trophy for first place.

He practiced hard after that first round and went back on day two and shot a blistering 32. Cox eagled both par five's and shot the lowest round of the tournament in his division.  That score vaulted him into a tie for first place and allowed him to play the third round in the elite final group.

Day three arrived and everyone knew it was going to be close. Despite bogeys on the first two holes, Cox hit a booming tee shot on the par-five, third hole, but his second shot went over the green.  He had an uphill lie about 25 feet from the hole. To everyone's amazement, he chipped the ball to the edge of the green and it rolled downhill, across the green and into the hole. An eagle and he was back in the game and tied for the lead.

Cox never looked back. He eagled the second par five hole — number six.  He went on to par the last three holes and won the tournament by two strokes with a 34 and four eagles over two days.

By virtue of this win, Cox is eligible to play in every USKids World Championship until age 12.

This summer Cox has competed on the Dallas Local Tour for USKids and won the Tour Championship on August 1 at Brookhaven Country Club, shooting a 35-35 over two days. He was named Player of the Year. Cox also shot his best round to date - a 31 - on July 17 at Brookhaven.
